“I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.”

-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ‘Letter from a Birmingham Jail’ (1963)

New Year’s resolutions are often more problemati New Year’s resolutions are often more problematic than helpful. Resolutions have been commercialized and capitalized upon, so people who want to feel better will spend money on gym memberships or weight loss fads. Lofty promises are made and then broken, which only leads to a worsened feeling of self-defeat.

But New Year’s resolutions don’t need to be unattainable or expensive. They don’t need to be a sudden and total overhaul. The most effective approach is making small but manageable changes. Pick a simple change and start there.

Drink more water every day. Incorporate fruits and vegetables more often. If you want to move your body more, you don’t need to resolve to run 5 miles a day. You just need to establish a pattern of moving for 5 minutes every morning. Then 10 minutes, then 20. The daily habit is the most important part.

Read a book about gentle parenting. Get a journal and write about your triggers. Learn your own love language and honor it. Spend weekly time in nature. Take a walk around the block.

If you skip a day, don’t let it completely derail you. Just carry on the next day and strive for consistency. Set health goals because you want to *feel* better, not for superficial reasons. Make changes out of self-love, instead of guilt or shame 💖
