There is a new social media trend going around, the premise being to post “makeup-free selfies” to raise awareness and money for Cancer Research UK. Headlines all over the web express excitement (and some dismay) that women, especially celebrities, are willing to go bare-faced for all to see. It is considered noble and heroic in the name of curing cancer.
I think it’s a neat idea, and I think everyone should advocate for what they believe in however they feel is best.
But this campaign doesn’t resonate with me. I don’t wear makeup (aside from tinted lip balm on occasion), because I’ve worked hard on accepting my face the way it is. I like feeling confident and comfortable with nothing on my skin but some coconut oil. Don’t get me wrong– I think makeup can be a fun form of self-expression. If a woman truly wants to wear it, it’s not my business. But I am uncomfortable with the programming that women need to wear make-up in order to be socially acceptable and thought of as beautiful. It’s not for me.
And part of the reason is because of the plethora of toxic ingredients in makeup. Some ingredients are linked to breathing problems, hormone disruption, skin issues, and even cancer.
Removing these chemicals from makeup, along with the well-known cancer-causing toxins in our daily diet and environment, would be a more effective way to beat cancer than taking a makeup-free selfie.
So what can you do?
- Breastfeed, and become a breastfeeding advocate. Not breastfeeding has been linked to increased cancer rates for both mother and child.
- Use safe, non-toxic beauty and body products.
- Remove common pollutants from your home.
- Eat fresh, whole, healthy, organic food, and limit packaged/processed food. Diet is a huge part of preventing or feeding cancer.
- Make time to exercise every day. Have fun with it!
Finding a cure for cancer is a noble cause, but taking simple steps to prevent it in the first place is even better.
