Target has a surprising breastfeeding policy — and it’s shockingly good!

After several incidences of mothers being asked to cover up or move while breastfeeding, Target has implemented a new training policy. This is great news for breastfeeding mothers everywhere.

While Target has claimed to be breastfeeding-friendly in the past, clearly their employees were lacking consistent training.

The fuzzy photo says:

Guests may openly breastfeed in our stores or ask where they can go to breastfeed their child. When this happens, remember these points:

• Target’s policy supports breastfeeding in any area of our stores, including our fitting rooms, even if others are waiting
• If you see a guest breastfeeding in our stores, do not approach her
• If she approaches and asks you for a location to breastfeed, offer the fitting room (do not offer the restroom as an option)

This is the kind of training and policy all businesses need to embrace. It is time for mothers to be able to breastfeed freely in public, without fear of repercussions. A supportive environment will undoubtedly help increase breastfeeding rates, which is an important matter of public health.
